{"id":3092,"date":"2017-03-31T14:31:30","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T14:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/food-safety.org.uk\/courses\/?page_id=3092"},"modified":"2020-05-10T18:25:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-10T17:25:54","slug":"setting-up","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/food-safety.org.uk\/courses\/setting-up\/","title":{"rendered":"SETTING UP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Setting Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are planning to start a new catering business, you must register\u00a0your premises with the environmental health service at your local\u00a0authority at least 28 days before opening.\u00a0This is a legal requirement under the Food Premises (Registration)\u00a0Regulations 1991 and applies to most types of food business,\u00a0including catering businesses run from home, and mobile or\u00a0temporary premises such as stalls and burger vans.<\/p>\n<p>Contact your local<br \/>authority for information on how to register.<\/p>\n<p>If food premises are used by several catering businesses (for example,\u00a0a village hall or conference centre), the person who allows the\u00a0premises to be used for this purpose is responsible for registering\u00a0them. However, if you use your own premises for a catering business,\u00a0you must register them, even if you use other premises too.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that you might need planning permission to alter premises.\u00a0And you will also need to pay business rates on most premises.<br \/>Contact your local authority for information on these matters.<br \/>Rules about premises<br \/>When you choose the premises for your business, it is very important to make sure that they:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0meet the necessary regulations<br \/>2. \u00a0are suitable for the purpose of your business<br \/>3. \u00a0allow you to prepare food safely<\/p>\n<p>The following rules apply to your whole premises, not just the areas\u00a0used for preparing food.<\/p>\n<p>Design and construction<\/p>\n<p>The premises you use must be designed and built in a way that allowsyou to keep the place clean and to work hygienically. They must alsobe designed to keep out pests, such as flies and rats.<\/p>\n<p>Where you work<\/p>\n<p>Handwashing facilities and toilets<\/p>\n<p>Your premises must have enough washbasins for staff to wash theirhands. (This is as well as sinks in food areas for washing food andcleaning equipment \u2013 see page 4.) There must also be enough toiletsand these must not lead directly into food areas.<\/p>\n<p>Washbasins<br \/>Basins for washing hands must have hot and cold running water. And you must provide soap and materials for drying hands hygienically,such as disposable towels.<\/p>\n<p>Changing facilities<br \/>You must provide adequate facilities for staff to change their clothes,where necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Waste<br \/>You must make adequate arrangements for food waste and other types of rubbish to be stored and removed.<\/p>\n<p>There are rules about the way certain types of food waste must be collected and disposed of.
